Toxic Exposure

Polyvinyl Chloride Linked to Liver Cancer

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Puts Manufacturing Workers At Increased Risk of Developing Liver Cancer (Angiosarcoma)

Many plastic products used in construction materials, furniture, and common household products contain Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), a toxic chemical that is a leading cause of angiosarcoma, a deadly form of liver cancer. The chemical can be particularly harmful to employees who suffer prolonged exposure to PVC for years at work. People who work in the manufacture or disposal of PVC products or live nearby PVC processing facilities may be exposed to dangerously high levels of PVC and be at increased risk of developing angiosarcoma.

What is Angiosarcoma?

Angiosarcoma is an aggressive and often deadly form of cancer that begins in the linings of blood vessels. While it can originate anywhere in the body, the disease most often starts in the skin, liver, breast, spleen, bone, lung and heart. Common symptoms of angiosarcoma may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Swelling or hardening of the skin
  • Aches and pains
  • Lesions of the skin

What Types of Products Contain PVC?

Hundreds of products and materials, including plastic pipes, electrical wire insulation, children’s toys, and food packaging contain PVC. In most cases, the amount of PVC used is small enough to not pose a threat to people who have only minor contact with the products. However, people who work for an extended period of time around PVC or live near facilities where the chemical is produced or disposed of may develop a host of medical problems, including angiosarcoma. The following products may contain PVC:

  • Electrical wire insulation
  • Rain gutters
  • Window blinds and coverings
  • Shower curtains
  • Door and window trim
  • Wallpaper
  • Water pipes
  • Commercial signs and automobile markings
  • Portable personal electronics, such as radios, televisions, and CD players
  • Playground Equipment
  • Vinyl flooring
