Toxic Exposure

Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML): Bone Cancer Caused by Benzene Exposure

Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), a form of leukemia, is the most common type of cancer related to benzene exposure. AML impairs the body’s ability to create healthy blood cells inside bone marrow, allowing devastating cancer to form and spread. People with AML have fewer white blood cells, which leaves them more susceptible to deadly infections.

AML is also known as acute myelocytic leukemia, acute myelogenous leukemia, acute granulocytic leukemia, and acute non-lymphocytic leukemia. The disease most often spreads quickly after forming in white blood cells, most types of red blood cells, and platelet-making cells.

AML Symptoms and Treatment

People suffering from AML may experience symptoms including bleeding, bruising, frequent infections, and shortness of breath. Since AML is a form of leukemia, the disease can progress rapidly and be fatal within weeks or months if left untreated.

AML may also cause anemia, fatigue, fever, spots on the skin, and weight loss. Diagnosis of the disease is most often confirmed through blood tests and examination of bone marrow. AML is commonly treated with chemotherapy or anti-cancer drugs, but stem cell transplants may also be an option in some cases.
