NSF / NFD

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis / Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NSF / NFD)

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis or Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NSF / NFD) was first identified in 1997; it has been observed in people suffering from moderate renal dysfunction to end-stage kidney failure. NSF / NFD is a debilitating and potentially life-threatening skin disorder that has been linked to gadolinium-based contrast agents which are injected in MRI or MRA procedures.  To receive legal help for yourself or a loved one about your NSF / NFD case, call 1-866-50-RIGHTS (1-866-507-4448).  Alternatively, fill out a gadolinium case review form to receive a FREE consultation.

Characteristics of NSF/NFD

  • NSF/NFD has been observed in people with kidney damage or failure following an MRI or MRA during which a gadolinium contrast agent was administered via injection.
  • NSF can cause excessive formation of connective tissue in the skin and internal organs. Patients develop tight and rigid skin, and it may become extremely difficult to bend joints and to move.
  • Skin becomes thickened, coarse and hard and can become disabling.
  • NSF is progressive and may be fatal.
  • NSF/NFD can lead to fibrosis, or scarring, of body organs, which can impair organ function and be extremely dangerous to the victim.

Symptoms of NSF/NFD

  • Patches on the skin that are red or dark in color
