On January 19, 2006 the fears that Elidel could be linked to cancer were confirmed when the FDA issued a black box warning that said the cream may be linked with lymphoma and skin cancer. The FDA warning also said that Elidel should only be used for a short time, and not for continuous long-term use which was common amongst atopic dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis patients.
