In some cases, women have had to undergo additional, painful surgeries to correct the complications.

FDA Warns Users About Risks

In October 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a public health notification to warn about the risk of complications from the transvaginal placement of surgical mesh. The mesh is commonly used during surgery to bolster the vaginal walls and prevent movement of internal organs in an era that may be weakened or stretched out following pregnancy and child birth.

While rare, complications from the transvaginal placement of surgical mesh can pose serious health risks to women. The FDA has recommended that physicians receive additional training in the use of the products and give more information to patients about the mesh in an effort to reduce injuries and complications.

What are the Risks of Vaginal Surgical Mesh?

Some of the most serious injuries caused by the use of vaginal surgical mesh involve perforation (tearing) of the bowel, bladder, and blood vessels in and around the vagina. Also, the mesh has been shown to move around inside the body and pass through the lining of the vagina, causing pain and severe complications. If you surgeon is not properly trained in transvaginal placement of surgical mesh or not careful in placing the mesh material inside your body, serious injuries may occur.
