Victims of LASIK malpractice and complications are often devastated to find they are left with no vision, poor vision, or permanent eye damage and pain.
About one million people every year opt to have a type of refractive eye surgery, including Laser Assisted In-situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) and Photo Refractive Keratectomy (PRK). Thousands of those patients experience serious complications with their vision following their procedures.
Panel Addresses Lasik Complications
On April 25, 2008, there was a meeting of the FDA Ophthalmic Devices Advisory Panel involving representatives of the panel, the Joint LASIK Study Task Force, and members of the public. Members of the public spoke out about their negative experiences with LASIK and PRK and the depression and anxiety they have suffered since their operations.
Among the disturbing LASIK statistics discussed at the hearing:
- About five percent of patients say their vision was slightly worse than before the surgery
- Up to 15 percent of LASIK patients still need glasses occasionally.
- Up to five percent of LASIK patients report experiencing haze, halos, and glare in their vision.
- The incidence of persistent dry eye following surgery is estimated to be as high as 28 percent in Asian eyes and five percent in Caucasian eyes.
What is Lasik / Refractive Eye Surgery?
Lasik surgery, or refractive eye surgery, is an elective procedure which is designed to correct certain vision problems, including nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness, (hyperopia) and distorted vision (astigmatism). These vision problems involve the cornea’s inability to clearly focus on refracting light. In LASIK and PRK surgery, either a precise ultraviolet light beam or a computer-guided cutting laser is used to reshape the surface of the cornea and improve the eye’s ability to focus incoming light.
