Have You Had Reconstructive Knee (ACL) Surgery Using the CALAXO Surgical Screw? You May Have Rights

The CALAXO Osteoconductive Interference Screw, which was commonly used during reconstructive knee surgery to repair damage to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), was recalled due to rare, but painful injuries and complications suffered by patients following their surgeries. The surgical device was approved for use in the United States in 2006, but was recalled the next year after some patients developed painful symptoms within weeks of their surgeries. In some cases, patients were forced to undergo painful and additional procedures in an effort to repair the damage and remove the defective screws.

If you or a loved one was injured by the use of a CALAXO surgical screw during ACL surgery, you may have rights to be financially compensated for your medical bills, pain and suffering, lost income for time you were unable to work, and other damages. At Mark & Associates, P.C. our aggressive, experienced personal injury and consumers' rights attorneys are dedicated to helping people who are injured following ACL surgery performed with the CALAXO surgical screw. CALAXO Screws Recalled

On November 8, 2007, U.S. product safety officials recalled all CALAXO surgical screws after receiving multiple reports of serious complications in patients recovering from ACL surgeries. The recall affected all lot numbers and item codes of the medical devices distributed from 2006 until the date of the recall. Officials in the United Kingdom also instituted a recall of the screws in their countries.

How Did the CALAXO Screw Work?

The CALAXO surgical screw was used by reconstructive surgeons to hold a transplanted ligament in place on the repaired knee joint. It differed from other, more traditional devices in that the CALAXO screw was designed to gradually be absorbed into the body and disappear altogether within one year of the surgery. Most other types of surgical screws remain permanently implanted in the body. However, despite the novel approach, the CALAXO surgical screws caused problems right away, in many cases forcing surgeons to revisit the site of the operation and try to remove fragmented screws, diseased bone, and repair other damage. As a result, patients suffered far longer and more painful recovery periods.

What Kinds of Injuries Did the CALAXO Screw Cause?

Patients who underwent ACL knee surgery using CALAXO screws developed several types of complications in the knee, including:

  • Swelling
  • Fluid build-up
  • Persistent pain
  • Infection
