Was Your Home Built or Remodeled With Defective Chinese Drywall? You May Have Rights to Compensation

Thousands of newer homes in south Florida and other parts of the country were built or remodeled using defective Chinese drywall that is emitting a foul, "rotten-egg" odor, causing residents to suffer from severe headaches, breathing difficulty, and other medical problems. Also, the building materials have caused extensive property damage to homes, including corroding metal wiring, air conditioner coils and pipes, and blackening residents' metal jewelry.

In most cases, the problems associated with defective Chinese drywall can only be fixed by tearing out the materials and replacing them with new drywall. That can be an enormously expensive and inconvenient process for residents and homeowners.

If your home was built using defective Chinese drywall and you have suffered either physical injuries or incurred home-repair costs as a result, you may be entitled to financial compensation. Hundreds of thousands of homes in south Florida and other parts of the country may include defective drywall. Some homeowners have been forced to move out of their homes temporarily or permanently and tear out the defective drywall in order to eliminate the foul odors and stop the corrosion of metal wiring. At Mark & Associates, P.C. our aggressive, experienced personal injury and consumers' rights attorneys are dedicated to helping people who are injured by defective Chinese drywall. Millions of Square Feet Were Installed

By some estimates, as many as 10 million square feet of defective Chinese drywall were installed in homes in the United States, mostly in south Florida. A shortage of drywall during the area's building boom from 2004 to 2006 forced home builders to import the materials from Chinese suppliers, who are accused of using inferior ingredients, such as contaminated gypsum. When exposed to Florida humidity and ocean salt air during the trip overseas, the Chinese drywall is reacting negatively, releasing compounds including:

  • Iron disulfide
  • Hydrogen sulfide
  • Carbonyl sulfide
  • Sulfur dioxide
  • Carbon disulfide

Physical Injuries

People who live in homes built or remodeled since about 2001 using defective Chinese drywall have reported suffering a range of injuries, including:

  • Irritated eyes
  • Respiratory problems
  • Nose bleeds
  • Headaches

Chinese Dry Wall Property Damage

Defective Chinese drywall also has been linked to extensive property damage to homes where it was used. Among the most common types of damage are:

  • A strong sulfur, "rotten eggs," or chemical odor
  • Corroded air conditioner coils, metal wiring, and pipes
  • Blackened metal jewelry
