Suzuki GSX-R1000 Motorcycles Recalled Due to Cracked Frames

In January 2009, all model year 2005 and 2006 Suzuki GSX-R1000 motorcycles were the subject of a voluntary Safety Recall after reports of the frames on the motorcycles cracking, causing the potential for deadly and severe accidents. Owners of the popular street bikes were advised to bring the motorcycles in for necessary repairs to check for damage and, if necessary, strengthen the frame to prevent future breakage while riding. No information on deaths or injuries caused by the broken motorcycles parts was noted.

If you or a loved one has been injured or killed by a defective Suzuki GSX-R1000 motorcycle, you may be entitled to financial compensation for your medical bills, pain and suffering, and other damages. If a family member has died as the result of riding one of the recalled motorcycles, you may qualify for damages to compensate you for the wrongful death. ‘Hazardous Maneuvers’ Blamed for Damage

In ordering the recall, Suzuki said “ordinary operation” of the GSX-R1000s did not create a risk of cracking or breaking of the frame. Instead, the company blamed “hazardous maneuvers,” such as repeated hard landings after extended wheelies, jumps, or other stunts, for causing the cracks to appear in the motorcycle’s frame. Also, some frames might be cracked following front-end collisions involving the motorcycles. The company contends that under normal riding conditions, the GSX-R1000 is safe.

The company said it planned to inspect the recalled motorcycles for damage and if cracks were found, to install a new frame outfitted with an aluminum brace to bolster the underside of the top spar of the frame both behind and below the steering neck.

Cracked Frames: Common Motorcycle Defects

Broken frames are common causes of motorcycle accidents and injuries. A broken or cracked frame can cause a motorcycle to suddenly veer out of control, causing injury or death to the rider as well as any passengers, bystanders, or other motorists.

Other common motorcycle defects include:

  • Brakes that fail to operate
  • Tires that cause blowouts or ruptures
  • Steering columns which break, crack, detach from the motorcycle
  • Gasoline tanks which leak or rupture, leading to explosions or fires
  • Faulty electrical wiring or systems that spark fires
