Zyprexa Linked to Diabetes
Zyprexa (generic: olazapine) was approved in 1996 and is part of the class of newer antipsychotic medications called “atypical antipsychotics.” Prescribed to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and psychotic depression, Zyprexa has become one of the most popular drugs in its class and has been prescribed to 20 million people worldwide.
Zyprexa is manufactured by Eli Lilly & Company and is widely prescribed off-label for disorders such as anxiety disorder, panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, and various psychological disorders in children and adolescents.
Zyprexa Side Effects & Complications
Zyprexa has been linked to a high incidence of diabetes, hyperglycemia, pancreatitis and other blood sugar disorders. Many patients on Zyprexa gain weight and develop diabetes soon after beginning the medication. Originally marketed by Eli Lilly as having fewer motor side effects such as tardive dyskenisia than the older antipsychotics such as Haldol, Zyprexa has turned out to be dangerous for many people on the drug. In April 2005, the FDA warned that Zyprexa and other drugs in the class can cause premature death in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis.
