Zicam Cold Remedies Subject of FDA Warning

The Food and Drug Administration has warned consumers about the risk of losing your sense of smell after using some Zicam brand nasal cold remedy products. Since 1999, at least 130 people in the United States have reported developing anosmia (also called loss of the sense of smell) after using specific Zicam brand cold treatments. Some people have temporarily lost their sense of smell while others have been permanently deprived of the sense.

FDA Warns of Zicam Dangers

On June 16, 2009, the Food and Drug Administration issued a public health warning to consumers about the risks of injury from three brands of Zicam products. They were:

• Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel

• Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs

• Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs Kids Size

The FDA said since 1999 when the first Zicam product was approved in the U.S., more than 100 people have reported to the agency that they developed anosmia after using the products. The FDA said zinc used in the therapies may be interfering with olfactory functioning (the sense of smell).

What is Anosmia?

Anosmia is another term for the loss of the sense of smell. It can be permanent or temporary. Also, some people with anosmia lose the ability to detect some smells but not for others, a condition which is called specific anosmia and is most often genetically passed from parents to children.

What Causes Anosmia?

The most common cause of anosmia is nasal occlusion caused by inflammation of the nasal membranes (also called rhinitis). Exposure to air pollution, head injuries, viral infections, and the use of certain types of nasal sprays, swabs, gels, or mists also have been known to cause people to lose the sense of smell.
