Injured by the Asthma Drug Serevent? You May Have Rights

Patients who have used the asthma inhaler Serevent, particularly children and the elderly, are at increased risk of developing deadly complications. The popular brand belongs to the class of asthma drugs called long-acting beta agonists, or LABAs, which have been linked to life-threatening breathing complications in some users.

An estimated 22 million people in the United States, including 6.5 million children, suffer from asthma. About six million of those people take LABAs. A panel of medical experts recently warned the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that the risks of Serevent (salmeterol) and other LABAs are too great and that other, safer asthma treatments should be used instead.

If you or a loved one has taken Serevent for asthma and experienced difficulty breathing or other medical problems, you may have rights. FDA Panel Issues Serevent Warning

In December 2008, an FDA advisory panel concluded that the risks of death and serious injury associated with Serevent and other similar brands are greater than the benefits the drugs provide. The panel found an additional 2.8 asthma-related events for every 1,000 patients who were treated with a LABA, compared with patients who were not taking the drugs. The panel recommended that the FDA require tougher wording on the packaging of Serevent to warn physicians and patients about the risks.

What are LABAs?

Serevent and similar drugs are classified as long-acting beta agonists (LABAs), which are designed to prevent asthma attacks from occurring. Unlike other drugs, which are taken at the onset of an asthma attack to quickly restore normal breathing, LABAs are taken daily, even when asthma symptoms are not present, to prevent swelling in the airways. LABAs are commonly prescribed to patients who suffer asthma symptoms while they sleep or exercise.
