FDA Issues Reglan Warning

In February 2009, the Food and Drug Administration issued a safety advisory to warn about the long-term or high-dose use of Reglan. The warning was prompted by reports of patients developing tardive dyskinesia while taking the drug in high doses or for longer than three months. Reglan is FDA-approved for short-term use for gastrointestinal disorder in patients who have not benefitted from other treatments. The FDA required the makers of Reglan and other metoclopramide drugs to add boxed warnings to the products’ labeling about the risks of high-dose use or long-term use of the drugs.

What is Tardive Dyskinesia?

Tardive dyskinesia is a permanent condition that commonly causes involuntary, repetitive jerky movements of the hands, arms, legs, and face. There is no cure or effective treatment for tardive dyskinesia, however, the symptoms may be reduced or eliminated if the patient stops taking Reglan for gastrointestinal problems.

Tardive Dyskinesia Symptoms

The following are common symptoms of tardive dyskinesia, which may be caused by long-term or high-dose use of the gastrointestinal drug Reglan:

• Lip smacking
• Grimacing
• Tongue protrusion
• Puckering and/or pursing of the lips
• Rapid eye movements
• Blinking
