FDA Takes Action Against Ketek
On February 12, 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced it no longer approved Ketek for use in treating acute bacterial sinusitis and acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis. Officials determined that the risks of the drug outweighed the benefits to patients with those conditions. Ketek is still approved for the treatment of mild to moderate forms of community acquired pneumonia.
The FDA also ordered that Ketek's labeling include a "Black Box Warning," the strongest form of warning the agency can issue, to alert users that drug should not be given to patients with myasthenia gravis, a disease that causes muscle weakness. Patients with the disease were more likely to suffer severe side potentially life-threatening effects from Ketek.
FDA safety reviewers determined that Ketek had been linked to 12 cases of liver failure, including four deaths, in the United States through April 2006. In June 2006, the FDA warned doctors and patients about the increased risk of liver toxicity from taking Ketek.
