FDA Issues Stern Warnings About Advair

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has taken numerous actions and issued several advisories about Advair in recent years.

In January 2008, the FDA voiced concerns about the safety of Advair and similar drugs, called long-acting beta2 adrenergic agonists, when used by young people with asthma. An FDA advisory panel urged continuing study of the risks for pediatric patients.

In 2006, the FDA approved new safety labeling and medication guides for Advair and similar drugs. That approval followed a 2003 ruling to include a “Black Box Warning” on Advair’s packaging to alert users of the risk of serious health risks.

In 2005, the FDA recommended that Advair be used only as a last option for asthma treatment and that it should not be used by patients who could be effectively treated with other measures, including corticosteroid or a corticosteroid along with use of a short-acting bronchodilator.
