MRI Agent Gadolinium
MRI Agent Gadolinium Linked to Dangerous Skin Disorder in Kidney Patients
In MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) or MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiography) scans, patients may be injected with a gadolinium-based contrast agent which can lead to a life-threatening skin disorder in kidney patients. Because kidney failure patients may be unable to filter the gadolinium out of their systems, a recently identified disorder called Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis / Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermotherapy (NSF/NFD) may develop. The FDA has warned against utilizing gadolinium-based contrast agents in kidney patients unless absolutely necessary, and if they are used, that the patient be put on dialysis immediately after the procedure. It is estimated that there are 200-500 cases of NSF / NFD worldwide. The FDA has received reports of 90 cases of NSF / NFD in kidney patients up until December, 2006.
