FDA Panel Issues Warning About Foradil

In December 2008, an advisory panel to the FDA found that the risks of death and serious injury associated with Foradil and other similar brands of LABAs are greater than the therapeutic benefits the drugs provide. The panel found an additional 2.8 asthma-related events for every 1,000 patients who were treated with a LABA, compared with patients who were not taking the drugs. The panel recommended that the FDA include tougher warnings on the packaging of Foradil to alert physicians and patients about the risks.

What are LABAs?

Foradil and other drugs belong to a class of drugs called long-acting beta agonists (LABAs), which are designed to prevent asthma attacks from occurring. Unlike other asthma drugs, which are designed to be taken at the onset of an asthma attack to quickly restore normal breathing, LABAs are taken daily, even when asthma symptoms are not present, to prevent swelling in the airways. LABAs are most often prescribed for patients who suffer asthma symptoms while they are exercising or sleeping.
