AMO Complete Moisture Plus Recalled Due to Serious Eye Infections
On May 25, 2007, Advanced Medical Optics Inc. (AMO) recalled its AMO Complete MoisturePlus Multi Purpose Solution due to the risk of a serious eye infection referred to as Acanthamoeba Keratitis, which is caused by a parasite in the eye and primarily affects soft contact lens wearers. Acanthamoeba keratitis can cause vision loss and require patients to undergo corneal transplant surgery. This surgery is not always successful, and many patients require multiple surgeries.
CDC and FDA Investigate Cases of Corneal Infection
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) has commenced a multistate investigation into Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) cases. The agency has concluded that the risk of developing Acanthamoeba keratitis was at least seven (7) times greater for people who wore soft contact lenses and used AMO Complete MoisturePlus solution. The investigation looked at the increase in AK cases from 2004 – 2007. There have been 138 confirmed AK cases reported to the CDC of people who experienced symptoms starting January 1, 2005.
