ReNu with MoistureLoc Linked to Fusarium Keratitis

Bausch & Lomb permanently removed its contact lens solution Renu with MoistureLoc from the market on May 15, 2006 due to an outbreak of extremely serious fungal eye infections called fungal keratitis, caused by the fusarium fungus. Bausch & Lomb had suspended shipments in April and asked retailers to stop selling the product. In February 2006, the company had stopped selling ReNu with MoistureLoc in several Asian countries.  The outbreak affected hundreds of contact lens wearers worldwide. Many victims of ReNu with MoistureLoc suffered partial or complete loss of vision in the affected eye(s) and were forced to undergo cornea transplantation surgery.  Some required multiple cornea surgeries.

FDA & CDC Investigation of the Outbreak

The FDA and CDC began investigating fungal keratitis reports throughout the country in April of 2006.  The agencies noted that a disproportionate number of fungal keratitis victims used ReNu with MoistureLoc versus other contact lens solutions.  ReNu with MoistureLoc was manufactured at Busch & Lomb’s Greenville, South Carolina facility, which was also investigated and inspected. Bausch & Lomb has admitted that the formulation of ReNu with MoistureLoc was making users more prone to fusarium keratitis infection. The company revealed that MoistureLoc’s disinfectant and moisture-retention agents could create a film that sheltered the fusarium fungus from the sterilizer in the product, allowing the fungus to proliferate.
