Hernia Surgery and the Kugel Hernia Mesh Patch
Monday, August 20, 2007
The Composix Kugel Mesh Patch is manufactured by Davol, Inc. (parent company: C.R. Bard, Inc.). The Kugel Hernia Mesh Patch is a device that is used during surgery to repair ventral hernias (hernias of the abdomen).
For those of you who have had a hernia know that what happens is the stomach muscles are too weak to contain the intestines and as a result a rupture occurs in the muscle wall which allows the intestines to protrude. A hernia mesh is a device thats used during surgery to repair the hernia. Its a device thats placed between the stomach muscles and the abdominal wall in order to provide support and keep the intestines in the abdominal cavity. The primary purpose the Kugel Hernia mesh was minimize pain and expedite recovery during hernia surgery.
These particular products came to the market in the 2001 timeframe, and due to some serious safety concerns that have arisen with the device many of them have now been subject to what is called a "Class 1 Recall" by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). A Class 1 Recall occurs when the FDA believes that a product is dangerous or defective and could cause serious health problems or death.
The recall with the Composix Kugel Hernia Mesh started in 2005, but has been what is called a "rolling recall". A rolling recall is a recall that has expanded over time to additional product lines and lot numbers. The primary problem with the Composix Kugel Mesh Patch is that when it is inserted into the abdomen, it opens up, or redeploys, as a result of a hard memory recoil ring that surrounds the mesh patch. The memory recoil ring has been found to break under stress and forms a sharp knife like protrusion which can then slice and cut into the bodies internal organs. If that happens, the broken and exposed recoil ring can perforate the intestines allowing the patch to migrate from its original location. It can cause an abscess or a localized collection of puss in tissues of the body as well as causing bowel obstructions and widespread infection. Symptoms that one might experience with these conditions would include fever, nausea, abnormal bowel movements. If you have had any of those symptoms following the placement of a hernia mesh patch you really ought to seek medical attention immediately.
At Mark & Associates we are evaluating claims where people have received the Kugel Hernia Mesh Patch and have had any of the above symptoms. Feel free to give us a call at 1-866-50-RIGHTS ( 1-866-507-4448) or visit us online at www.herniameshlawsuit.com
