Food Origin Labeling Goes Into Effect, Aimed at Curtailing Contamination

Starting on October 1, 2008, dozens of common foods found in local grocery stores will have stickers or other labels indicating the country where the food was grown. The move to include county-of-origin labeling on certain foods has been in the works for years and is meant to help consumers who want certain products -- Chilean grapes or California tomatoes, for example – while making it easier to track down the source of food-borne disease epidemics.
